Overview
Custom Templates has been one of the most requested features at Taskworld. There was an alternative feature called copy project that was suggested as a workaround. However, this also causes several other issues in terms of analytics and clutter.
I was responsible for leading this project to refine the core problems and propose a solution. My team consisted of a product manager and 5 engineers.
After completion of this project, it had become the second most used feature during project creation, with 20% of new projects using a custom template.

Problems With the Copy Project Workaround

Copy project feature duplicated unnecessary information.
"I don't want comments, activities, attachments, and completed tasks to be duplicated to a new project."

Hard to distinguish between templates and actual projects
"My team member mistook it as an actual project and started working in the template"

Template tasks affected the accuracy of all analytics
"An Overview page included tasks and projects that were created in the template"
User Journey

Competitive Analysis
Our goals were to understand our position among competitors and what features we needed in order to compare with our competitors.

Solution
Design
We had been through several iterations of the template feature in terms of design, solution, and feasibility for the MVP. Due to limited technical resources and time, we decided to go with a solution to save an existing project as a template and have a list of templates available for users when creating new projects.
Create a Template
Save a project to template from the project settings

Use a Template
When triggering the new project button, choose the “Saved template” tab to see the project templates

Delete a Template
Users can delete created templates from the template list.

Results
Feature Launch!
“Custom template became the 2nd most used template with 20% of all new projects using it.”
After we launched this feature we checked the usage data of custom templates compared with the starter templates Taskworld provided to users.
